Capturing moments is photographer Rachel Hudgins specialty. Although normally her subjects are children and families, Rachel shared with us some images of fleurs she recently snapped. Read on to learn about where Rachel is traveling to next and how these travels serve as her greatest inspiration.
What do you do? Photographer, obviously. But someone once described me as a witness to all the beauty in my clients' lives. I liked that.
Who/What inspires you on a day to day basis? Inspiration for me comes from travel. There is something about going away and coming back. You take in all this new information and when you come back, you see your own world with fresh eyes. “I should make my bed differently, or I want my entry to look like the one I saw, etc.” I remember staying at the Tawaraya Inn in Kyoto years ago. There was no furniture with the exception of one low table and your belongings stayed in the entryway. There was a single small lantern on the floor and a simple piece of art on the wall above it. No television, just windows framing a perfect little Japanese garden. At night they would put a futon on the floor, a clock and a flashlight. It was the most peaceful and serene environment I’ve ever experienced. It made me want to come home and clear as much visual clutter as it could.
What projects are you currently working on? I just finished this incredible project with City School of the Arts. A pilot of Moana for Disney Jr. from start to finish with some incredibly talented kids. I didn’t want it to end. The images are under wraps until the project is officially announced but it was beautiful. This time of year, I do vacation projects with families. With school schedules so heavy, it’s one of the few times everyone is together. I meet them for a day or two at their favorite summer spot and we see what happens. The best images are the little in-between moments - when we are together for extended periods, the pictures are full of those small memories that become treasures.
Where are you planning to travel to next? I have lots of travel in the next few months but the one that excites people most is Bali. I’ve never been. The family I’ll be photographing is one I’ve worked with for nine years and whatever they do, it's gorgeous. I’m sure this will be no different.
Where is your go-to spot in the Hamptons? I love a classic like Sip’n Soda in Southampton. And Tiina The Store in Amagansett is just too good!
Favorite workout of the moment? Physique 57 is a staple - it’s just so effective. I also love Core Cult Jump at New York Pilates - great lower body burn and fun to mix it up.
